Copyright & Source Policy

Etherfolk works with original artwork, historic texts, public-domain images, archival references, and modern reconstructions.

This policy explains how those materials are used and what rights apply to the finished work.

Original Etherfolk Work

Unless a product description states otherwise, Etherfolk designs are original compositions, interpretations, or reconstructions created for Etherfolk LLC.

This may include:

  • original illustrations and layouts;

  • reconstructions assembled from several texts or visual sources;

  • newly created borders, labels, symbols, and typography;

  • restored, recoloured, or rearranged public-domain material;

  • original writing, product descriptions, and editorial articles.

The underlying idea, historical subject, religious text, or public-domain source may not belong to Etherfolk. Etherfolk’s copyright applies to the original elements added to the finished design, including its particular illustration, restoration, arrangement, and presentation. US copyright protection for a derivative work covers the new material contributed, rather than the pre-existing material itself.

Public-Domain Sources

Some Etherfolk works incorporate material believed to be in the public domain, including historic maps, manuscripts, illustrations, quotations, and religious texts.

Where practical, the relevant product description identifies a specific source when the design closely reproduces or restores it.

Public-domain material remains public domain. Etherfolk does not claim ownership of an underlying historic image or text merely because it appears in an Etherfolk product.

However, Etherfolk may hold rights in new creative elements added to that material, such as:

  • restoration work;

  • original illustration;

  • colour treatment;

  • composition and arrangement;

  • added labels or ornament;

  • accompanying written material;

  • product photography and mockups.

Reconstructions and Adaptations

Many works in the archive are not facsimiles of one surviving historical object.

A reconstruction may gather elements from several manuscripts, passages, maps, artistic traditions, or scholarly interpretations into one newly created composition.

Where relevant, listings identify a work using language such as:

  • original Etherfolk composition;

  • modern reconstruction;

  • adaptation after a named source;

  • restored public-domain image;

  • speculative archive plate;

  • fictional document created in a historical style.

These descriptions are intended to distinguish newly created work from an original antique, manuscript, map, or recovered document.

Scripture and Historical Quotations

Etherfolk may quote Scripture, historic inscriptions, and other older texts within artwork and editorial material.

The copyright status of a quotation can depend on the date and translation used. Ancient source texts may be public domain while a modern translation remains protected.

Etherfolk aims to use public-domain translations, brief quotations, licensed material, or original wording where appropriate.

A citation identifies the source of a passage. It does not imply endorsement, sponsorship, or affiliation by the author, translator, publisher, religious institution, or archive.

Cultural and Historical Sources

Etherfolk draws from several religious, artistic, and cosmological traditions.

Source material is used for artistic, historical, educational, and editorial purposes. Etherfolk does not claim ownership of the traditions, beliefs, symbols, deities, narratives, or historic systems represented.

Whenever a design closely follows a particular surviving work or visual tradition, Etherfolk aims to identify that relationship accurately and avoid presenting a modern composition as an original historical artifact.

Product Ownership and Copyright

Purchasing an Etherfolk product gives the customer ownership of that physical item.

It does not transfer copyright in the artwork or grant permission to reproduce it. Ownership of a physical copy and ownership of the copyright embodied in that copy are legally distinct.

Without written permission, customers may not:

  • scan or photograph artwork for reproduction;

  • create or sell prints, apparel, downloads, or other copies;

  • upload high-resolution artwork for public or commercial use;

  • alter the artwork and distribute or sell the altered version;

  • use Etherfolk artwork in branding, advertising, merchandise, or commercial media;

  • authorize another person or company to reproduce it.

Customers may display, give away, or resell the original physical item they purchased, subject to applicable law. This does not include producing additional copies.

Website Content

The following content is owned by Etherfolk LLC or used with permission unless otherwise identified:

  • original artwork;

  • product photography and mockups;

  • written descriptions;

  • editorial articles;

  • logos and branding;

  • website graphics;

  • original page layouts and downloadable materials.

You may share a standard link to an Etherfolk webpage or social-media post.

Images or text may not be copied in substantial part, republished, scraped for commercial use, or used to create competing products without permission.

Editorial Reference and Fair Use

Etherfolk articles may reproduce limited portions of source material for commentary, criticism, historical discussion, education, or identification.

Fair use is determined case by case and depends on factors including the purpose of the use, the nature of the original work, the amount used, and the effect on the market for the original.

The presence of material on Etherfolk does not mean that unrestricted reuse by others would also qualify as fair use.

Source Corrections and Rights Concerns

Etherfolk makes reasonable efforts to determine the source and copyright status of material before publication.

Archives and historic images do not always arrive with complete or reliable records. If you believe that:

  • a source has been attributed incorrectly;

  • a work has been described inaccurately;

  • material belonging to you has been used without authorization;

  • a public-domain determination is incorrect;

contact connect@etherfolk.org with:

  • your name and contact information;

  • the page or product involved;

  • a link to the material;

  • an explanation of your concern;

  • supporting information concerning authorship or ownership.

Etherfolk will review good-faith notices and may correct an attribution, add source information, temporarily remove material, or take another appropriate action.

Permissions and Licensing

Requests to reproduce, publish, license, or commercially use Etherfolk artwork may be sent to:

Please include:

  • the artwork or page involved;

  • the intended use;

  • the format and quantity;

  • whether the use is commercial;

  • the territory and expected duration.

Permission is not granted unless confirmed in writing by Etherfolk LLC.
