Ancient Egyptian Cosmology Framed Canvas Print: Nut Geb Ra Flat Earth Papyrus Art
from $44.00
"He made the sky and the earth according to his heart's desire." — Egyptian Book of the Dead
Before the modern model was imposed, the Egyptians mapped the structure of everything in pigment on papyrus — flat, precise, without perspective, without doubt.
This artifact recovers that vision.
Nut the sky goddess arches overhead as the star-covered firmament dome, her body the celestial vault itself. Shu the air god stands beneath her at the center of the sky, arms raised, holding the heavens above the earth. Ra's solar barque traverses the celestial ocean between them — falcon-headed, solar disc blazing, crew of eight distinct deity figures bearing ankhs and was-scepters. Below, Geb the earth god reclines as the flat earth itself — green-skinned, the Nile running through his body, pyramids and palm forests growing from his flesh.
Rendered in the strict flat register convention of Dynasty 19 New Kingdom tomb painting — pure mineral pigments, thick black outlines, zero perspective. A page from an archive someone tried to close.
